Why Do I Still Have Flies and Mosquitoes in Winter?

How many mosquitoes bother you in summer does not depend on the climatic conditions of the summer. On the contrary: the conditions under which the brood hatches are decisive for a mosquito plague. Warm temperatures and a high rate of precipitation in spring and early summer cause the population to explode. But your home can also offer the pests an optimal winter quarters.

    Where do mosquitoes hibernate?

Summer is long gone, the days are shorter and cooler and the mosquitoes are disappearing - supposedly. But unfortunately it's not that easy, because even in winter you are not necessarily safe from the bloodsuckers. Especially when an insect has found its way into your home, it will find the best conditions to survive the winter.

There is also a risk of mosquitoes in winter

There are no mosquito bites in winter? Unfortunately yes! That is very possible. Once the mosquito has entered your home, the annoying and itchy mosquito bites are almost as unavoidable as in summer. Because in the cold season, the thirst for blood of the pests is very great. But why might that be? Although the male mosquitoes die at the end of autumn, before that they mate with the many females, who survive the winter in large numbers without any problems. As with all insects, this incubation phase is very strenuous for the females. They therefore have an increased protein requirement, which they can cover very well with human blood.

    Survival artists: flies in winter

In winter the flies have developed one of the most effective hibernation strategies. The winter mosquito has a very dark body and this serves a very special purpose: dark colors absorb light. You are probably familiar with this effect because you sweat more in black clothes in summer than in a white T-shirt. The mosquitoes have taken advantage of this and absorb every single ray of sunshine to keep the body warm.
