Insect protection for horses: How to protect your horse from annoying bugs

    1. Fly blankets and fly masks

Fly blankets and fly masks are one effective way to protect horses from insects. These special blankets are made of lightweight, breathable material and cover the majority of the horse's body. Fly masks especially protect the sensitive head area, including eyes and ears.

    • Fly blankets: Make sure that the blanket fits well and does not chafe. Some models have a belly flap and neck section that provide extra protection.
    • Fly masks: These should also fit well and be made of a material that does not restrict the horse's vision. There are models with ear and nose protection for maximum protection.

    2. Insect sprays

Insect sprays are another effective way to keep insects away. The BremsenStop Intense Spray is easy to use and provides long-lasting protection.

    • How to use: Apply the spray evenly to your horse's coat. Pay special attention to sensitive areas such as the abdomen, legs and neck.
    • Repetition: Since the effect wears off after some time, you should use it regularly.

    3. Barn and pasture hygiene

A clean environment is key to minimizing insects. Dirt and moisture attract flies and other insects.

    • Manure: Regularly remove manure and wet straw from the barn and pasture.
    • Water points: Make sure drinking water containers are clean and change the water frequently to avoid insect build-up.
    • Compost: Store manure and compost as far away from the barn and pasture as possible to keep flies away.

    4. Promote natural enemies

A natural approach to insect control is to promote insectivores. Birds and bats can help keep the insect population in check.

    • Bird nesting boxes: Place bird nesting boxes near the barn and pasture.
    • Bat boxes: Bats are especially effective at hunting mosquitoes and other small insects. Hang bat boxes in the area.

    5. Plants as a natural defense

Certain plants can deter insects and at the same time be a nice addition to the stable area.

    • Herbs and flowers: Plants such as lavender, lemon balm, calendula and catnip have repellent properties against insects. These can be planted near the stable and pasture.

    6. Supplementary measures

In addition to the methods mentioned above, there are other measures that can improve insect protection:

    • Insect traps: The fly trap meadow can be set up outdoors, e.g. in the pasture, to reduce the insect population.

Protecting your horse from insects is essential for its well-being and health. With a combination of physical barriers, natural repellents and a clean environment, you can effectively protect your horse from the annoying pests. Try different methods and find out which ones best suit your horse and his environment. So nothing stands in the way of a relaxed and insect-free summer!
